With some fanfare, Facebook announced major updates to the Facebook homepage. Facebook News Feed now goes the way of the dinosaurs and is being replaced by Facebook Stream, which will pour status updates, photos, events, and even highlights onto your homepage. But why is Facebook doing this and what will it mean for users? And most of all, will a real-time homepage really change Facebook user behavior?
Part of the answer lies in current user behavior on two similar social media services, Twitter and FriendFeed. Both of these services have succeeded in creating consistently growing user interaction and in building strong communities. Additionally, Twitter has successfully integrated brands into their service. Facebook, which has struggled in some of these areas, may be looking to reassert itself as a social media leader with these new features.
